Iron, TIBC & Ferritin Panel
The Iron, Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) & Ferritin Panel is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates your body's iron levels and iron stores. Iron is an essential mineral that helps your body produce healthy red blood cells and transport oxygen to tissues and organs. Without enough iron, your body may not produce adequate hemoglobin, leading to fatigue, weakness, and other symptoms.
Unlike a single iron test, this panel provides a more complete picture of your iron status by measuring circulating iron, your body's ability to transport iron, and the amount of iron stored for future use. This combination of tests helps your healthcare provider determine whether you have an iron deficiency, iron overload, or another condition affecting iron metabolism.
If you are experiencing symptoms of anemia, monitoring a chronic condition, or evaluating your nutritional health, this panel offers valuable insights into one of your body's most important minerals.
What Does This Test Measure?
This panel evaluates several important markers involved in iron metabolism.
Serum Iron
Serum iron measures the amount of iron circulating in your bloodstream.
Iron is necessary for the production of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Low iron levels may reduce your body's ability to deliver oxygen efficiently, while high levels may indicate excessive iron accumulation or other medical conditions.
Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC)
TIBC measures your blood's ability to transport iron by evaluating the amount of transferrin, the protein responsible for carrying iron throughout your body.
When iron levels are low, your body often produces more transferrin, causing TIBC to increase. Conversely, certain medical conditions may lower TIBC.
TIBC helps your healthcare provider better understand whether abnormal iron levels are caused by iron deficiency or another underlying condition.
Ferritin
Ferritin measures the amount of iron stored in your body.
Because ferritin reflects your body's iron reserves, it is one of the earliest indicators of iron deficiency—even before anemia develops.
Low ferritin levels often indicate depleted iron stores, while elevated ferritin levels may occur with inflammation, liver disease, chronic illness, or iron overload disorders such as hereditary hemochromatosis.
Iron Saturation (Transferrin Saturation)
Many laboratories also calculate transferrin saturation, which estimates the percentage of transferrin currently carrying iron.
This measurement provides additional insight into how efficiently your body is transporting available iron and can help distinguish between different types of iron disorders.
Who Should Consider This Test?
