Trichomoniasis Test
Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Although it is highly treatable, many people infected with trichomoniasis have no symptoms, allowing the infection to spread unknowingly to sexual partners. The ICare Trichomoniasis Test uses advanced laboratory testing to accurately detect an active infection, helping you receive timely treatment and protect your sexual health.
When symptoms do occur, they may include unusual vaginal or penile discharge, itching, burning during urination, or discomfort during sexual activity. Because these symptoms can resemble those of other sexually transmitted infections, laboratory testing is the most reliable way to confirm a diagnosis.
With ICare's concierge mobile laboratory services, confidential STI testing is delivered directly to your home, office, or preferred location, providing the privacy, convenience, and personalized care you deserve.
What Does This Test Measure?
The Trichomoniasis Test detects the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, the parasite responsible for trichomoniasis.
Most modern laboratories use nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), which detects the parasite's genetic material (DNA or RNA). NAAT is considered the preferred and most accurate laboratory method for diagnosing trichomoniasis because of its excellent sensitivity and specificity.
Depending on the specimen collected, testing may be performed using:
Vaginal swab
Cervical swab
Urine sample
Urethral swab (when clinically indicated)
Your healthcare provider will determine the most appropriate specimen based on your symptoms and medical history.
Who Should Consider This Test?
The Trichomoniasis Test may be recommended for individuals who:
Experience unusual vaginal or penile discharge
Have burning or pain during urination
Experience genital itching or irritation
Have discomfort during sexual intercourse
Have been notified that a sexual partner tested positive for trichomoniasis
Have multiple sexual partners
Are seeking comprehensive STI screening
Are pregnant and have symptoms or risk factors, as recommended by their healthcare provider
Because many people have no symptoms, testing may also be appropriate after a potential exposure or as part of routine sexual health screening.
