Herpes (HSV) 1 & 2 Test
Understanding your sexual health is an important part of your overall well-being. The ICare Herpes (HSV) 1 & 2 Test screens for antibodies to Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2), helping determine whether you have been exposed to either virus.
Herpes is one of the most common viral infections worldwide. Many people who carry HSV have few or no symptoms, making testing an important way to better understand your health, protect your partners, and make informed healthcare decisions.
Whether you've experienced symptoms, had a recent exposure, or simply want comprehensive STI screening, the ICare HSV 1 & 2 Test provides confidential, accurate results you can trust.
With ICare's concierge mobile laboratory services, testing is discreet, convenient, and delivered directly to your home, office, or preferred location.
What Does This Test Measure?
The Herpes (HSV) 1 & 2 Test measures type-specific IgG antibodies produced by your immune system in response to herpes simplex virus infection.
HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1)
HSV-1 most commonly causes:
Cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth
Oral herpes
However, HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes through oral-to-genital contact.
HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2)
HSV-2 most commonly causes:
Genital herpes
Recurrent genital sores or blisters
Many individuals with HSV-2 have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, making laboratory testing an important tool for diagnosis.
Type-Specific IgG Antibody Testing
This test detects IgG antibodies, which generally develop several weeks after infection and typically remain present long-term.
Type-specific antibody testing helps distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 exposure, providing more detailed information than older, non-specific herpes tests.
Who Should Consider This Test?
The Herpes (HSV) 1 & 2 Test may be beneficial for individuals who:
Have experienced oral or genital sores or blisters
Have a partner diagnosed with herpes
Have had a recent potential exposure
Want comprehensive STI screening
Have multiple sexual partners
Are beginning a new sexual relationship
Are pregnant or planning pregnancy (as recommended by their healthcare provider)
Want to better understand their sexual health
Your healthcare provider may also recommend additional testing if active sores are present, as direct testing from a lesion may help diagnose a current outbreak.
