Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) Test
Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is a sexually transmitted bacterium that can cause infections of the urinary and reproductive tract. Because many people experience few or no symptoms, Mgen often goes undiagnosed and can be unknowingly transmitted to sexual partners. The ICare Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) Test uses advanced molecular testing to detect an active infection, providing fast, accurate results to help guide timely treatment.
Early diagnosis is important because untreated Mgen infections may lead to ongoing urinary or reproductive symptoms and, in some cases, complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or persistent urethritis.
With ICare's concierge laboratory services, confidential STI testing is convenient, discreet, and delivered with the personalized care you deserve.
What Does This Test Measure?
The Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) Test uses nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) to detect the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of Mycoplasma genitalium.
NAAT is considered the preferred and most accurate laboratory method for identifying an active Mgen infection.
Unlike antibody testing, this test detects the bacteria itself, allowing healthcare providers to diagnose a current infection rather than past exposure.
Depending on your healthcare provider's order, additional testing for other sexually transmitted infections may also be recommended, as co-infections can occur.
Who Should Consider This Test?
The Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) Test may be recommended for individuals who:
Experience painful or burning urination
Have unusual vaginal or penile discharge
Have pelvic pain or lower abdominal discomfort
Have persistent urethritis or cervicitis
Experience symptoms that continue after treatment for another STI
Have been notified that a sexual partner tested positive for Mgen
Want comprehensive STI screening after potential exposure
Have multiple sexual partners or other STI risk factors
Because many individuals have no symptoms, testing may also be appropriate based on your healthcare provider's assessment of your sexual health history and risk factors.
